The Great Mystery
Hundreds of millions of people struggle with their weight, and in particular (in the rich world) with excess weight. With huge amounts of money and time spent on research, studies and experiments, wouldn't you think by now that it would be easy to slim?
Actually, it is easy from one point of view: Just starve yourself. Unfortunately, dieting like this has long-term consequences, and one of them is that you end up being even more overweight!
Obstacles to Losing Weight
In fact, a great deal has been discovered about losing weight. There seem to be a few main obstacles to it.
- Dieting. Most diets are designed to get you to lose weight fast, but not to keep the weight off. That's partly what gives rise to the "yo-yo" weight problem. If dieting is not the way to do it, then what is?
- Exercise. Exercise always seems like such a drag, an unpleasant thing… until you actually start it. But how do you get over that initial resistance?
- Diet. (Not dieting, but diet.) Diet is what you eat. It's your eating habits. If your diet is rubbish, then your body will start to look and feel like rubbish – as will your moods. But, what do you do if you just don't like vegetables and you love fried fish and chips?
Compulsions. Do you find yourself unable to walk past a shop without buying your favourite chocolate? When you start that packet of crisps, do you have to keep going until it's finished? Does your craving for biscuits mean that all your hard work is undone in a few minutes? Cravings and compulsions, fortunately, are quite easy to overcome with simple NLP or similar methods.- Comfort eating. Do you handle stress by eating? When you eat to make yourself feel better, this is often known as comfort eating. Here, food is not the problem, but the symptom of the problem. Getting behind what's making you unhappy – and solving it – will usually get rid of the comfort eating.
- Allergies. Allergies can create some difficulty for people wanting to eat healthily, though a dietitian can put you on the right track. On the other hand, a poor diet can actually cause some food intolerances or allergies. Getting yourself healthy – which includes getting yourself to the right weight – can sometimes reduce your allergic reactions.
- Medical conditions. It's very rare that a medical condition causes a weight problem, although some medical conditions can make it harder. It's more common for weight problems to cause medical issues.

How to lose weight?
If you can address the mental side behind your relationship to food, and indeed your relationship to your own body, then you may find that it's not willpower that you need, but just a little practical knowledge.
