Depression
Depression is a debilitating illness that people who have not had it can struggle to understand. It's a complex issue with several aspects.
A doctor can diagnose depression, and can help in several ways. Modern research has found some powerful ways to treat depression.
- Medicine: Some people prefer to avoid drugs, but the right medicines can help to get you over the worst bits and allow the other treatments to work better.
- Psychotherapy: This does not work for everyone, but even so it can be helpful to give you a different perspective on life.
- CBT: Cognitive behavioural therapy works on changing the way you think your thoughts, to allow you the space to feel more positive and more in control.
- Psychiatry: Often prescribed for the most chronic cases, modern psychiatry can be very different from the stereotyped lying-on-the-couch Freudian format.
- Hypnotherapy: Like CBT, this also changes your thoughts, though it works in quite a different way. Hypnotherapy can be a powerful support mechanism when used together with other treatments.
- Mindfulness: A new addition to the world of therapy, discovered from Bhuddism, mindfulness has been found to be particularly effective in treating depression.
- Diet: There is evidence that what you put in your mouth can affect your mood. While it is, unfortunately, not an exact science, it can help to cut out recreational drugs (both legal — such as nicotine, alcohol and even caffeine — and illegal). Having a healthier diet and cutting out certain artificial additives can also make a difference for some people.
Generally, depression seems to respond best to a mixture of treatments. The medical routes help change the mix of chemicals in your brain to give you a lift, allowing the other therapies to do their job. The mental treatments work by changing your thought patterns, your unconscious responses, and your beliefs.
